Commissioning a portrait

A portrait commission is a chance to create a lasting record of a person, capturing not only their likeness but something of their character and presence.

Each portrait begins with drawings made from life, alongside photographs taken during the sittings. Life sittings typically take place over two sessions of approximately two hours each, allowing time to observe the sitter and develop the preparatory drawing. The final portrait is then painted in my Bristol studio.

A full guide to the commission process, including sittings, approvals and timescales, is available here.

Portrait prices

Portrait commission prices are based on the size of the canvas and the level of background detail.

Portrait commissions start at £4,000 for a 30 × 25 cm head-and-shoulders oil portrait with a simple coloured background.

A 120 × 90 cm group portrait of four people starts at £16,000. A full list of canvas sizes and starting prices is available here.

Framing

Portraits can be framed through an experienced framer with whom I work closely, selecting a moulding that complements the finished painting. Clients are also welcome to arrange framing independently.
